During the last five years, you have most likely seen the rise of businesses using social media. It has become an essential part of the daily communication between a business and its audience. Yet, this change has struck many businesses with unfavorable light. Some organizations are still slow to accept this change and refuse to implement this tool–afraid of the interaction that comes along with it. Eager to implement the new tools of communication into businesses that I cross paths within my career, I’ve heard every excuse. I am here to tell you why these 5 excuses are moot.

1. Social media could hurt my reputation.

Some businesses are worried about the negative comments that they may receive from the online community in regards to their business. The truth is, negative comments are going to happen–but they present opportunity. These comments allow for organizations to respond to them (remember, social media is a two-way communication effort). Responding to a negative comment with class and tact will actually give the impression of professionalism and understanding. This in itself builds the organization’s reputation, the comment also gives something else that is even more valuable; feedback. Negative comments usually stem from two things, a poor experience or an outcome happened as the constituent did not expect. By responding to these situations, the organization is giving the complaint thought, leading to the idea that the organization is listening. This is powerful and will keep people coming back.

2. My business wouldn’t benefit from having social media.

Many times, the power and necessity of social media is understated. Some organizations think they are immune to the reach that these websites have. Let me be very clear in saying this, social media is the driving force behind current marketing and communication efforts. Every successful organization that is serving its target audience is taking advantage of social media as a controlled means of communication.

3. Social media is hard to maintain.

Social media can be a monster of an undertaking if you let it. Designating someone within your organization to take on social media can be expensive and difficult, especially if the organization is small. But there are options! There are online services that can help your organization maintain its social media accounts. These services can help you maintain a calendar and provide your audiences the content you want them to see. Many times this undertaking can be difficult. That is why outsourcing your social media services can be extremely beneficial. Social media organizations, such as Blossom, have experienced professionals that know how to craft and frame your message the way you would like it, while appealing to your audience. Outsourcing can also save the time of employees, as no one has to worry about monitoring or content creation!

4. Outsourcing can be expensive.

This is a real concern, but not an excuse. It is true that many social media services can be expensive, but there are quality options available. For instance, Blossom has a package that only costs $100 a month! That is not only affordable, it’s an investment in your organization. Blossom and other social media services can improve your online presence, leading to a better tangible one.

5. Our target audience doesn’t use social media.

While this may have been true a few years ago, people of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics are on social media. There is close to no group that social media can’t reach. Just by being on social media, you are giving your organization the opportunity to be seen by other potential audiences.

There are genuine concerns for companies and organizations that are just now stepping foot into the social media game, but there are services that can help. Social media is a medium that has a large audience and can benefit any organization, you just have to be willing to try!
